Expert Volvo Service from Certified Technicians

Volvo drivers in Costa Mesa tend to value two things: safety and comfort that lasts. Whether it is an XC60 headed down Newport Blvd for a coastal trip or an S60 making short errands to South Coast Plaza, keeping those qualities intact takes care from a shop that understands Swedish engineering.

ExperTec Automotive’s ASE-certified technicians work on the full Volvo range, including the XC90, XC60, XC40, S60, V60, S90 and V90 Cross Country, plus T8 plug-in hybrids and electric models. We use dealer-level scan tools to read Volvo modules, reset service reminders and diagnose driver-assistance warnings, and we install OEM-quality parts throughout.

Living near the coast means salt air that can corrode brake hardware and electrical connectors, so our inspections look closely at both. Just off the 55 and close to the OC Fair grounds, we bring 30+ years in Orange County, 10 consecutive years voted OC’s best auto repair and a 3yr/36k nationwide warranty to every Volvo.

Volvo Regular Maintenance

Modern Volvos follow a fixed schedule of numbered services about every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, and the driver display shows a service reminder as each interval approaches. Every visit includes an oil and filter change with Volvo-approved synthetic oil and a multipoint inspection, while larger services add items like engine and cabin air filters, brake fluid, spark plugs and drive belt inspection at specific mileage steps; exact intervals vary by model/engine. Volvo considers automatic transmission fluid long-life, but many independent shops, including ours, recommend inspecting or changing it at higher mileage, especially in heat. T8 plug-in hybrids follow the same schedule plus hybrid system checks, and fully electric models follow a lighter time-based schedule.

Factory Guideline Maintenance Schedules

Upon completion of the standard maintenance tasks we provide an additional 30-point inspection to make sure that all components in your Volvo are up to date and working well.

Common Volvo Issues We See in Costa Mesa — and How We Fix Them

At ExperTec Automotive, we’ve been repairing Volvo vehicles in Orange County for over 30 years. Even well-built Volvo models develop specific problems as they age, and 55 Freeway commutes and coastal salt air add to the wear. Our Costa Mesa technicians diagnose these issues quickly, follow Volvo factory repair procedures and use quality parts you can trust.

Oil Consumption on Drive-E Engines

Some 2.0L Drive-E four-cylinder engines, used in many roughly 2015 to 2019 T5 and T6 models such as the XC60, XC90, S60 and V60, were widely reported to burn oil between services due to piston ring issues. Watch for low oil warnings or the need to top off often. We perform a documented oil consumption test, inspect the PCV system and explain repair options.

Coolant Expansion Tank Cracks

The plastic coolant expansion tank on many Volvos can crack or leak at its seams or cap with age and heat cycles, causing slow coolant loss, a sweet smell after driving or a low coolant warning. Ignoring it can lead to overheating. We pressure-test the cooling system, replace the tank and cap with OEM-quality parts and check hoses and the water pump while we are there.

PCV and Oil Trap Clogging

Older Volvo five- and six-cylinder engines rely on a PCV oil trap, sometimes called the flame trap, that can clog with sludge, building up crankcase pressure. Symptoms include a whistle at idle, oil leaks from seals, oil around the dipstick and higher oil consumption. Drive-E engines can have related PCV issues. We test crankcase pressure and replace the separator, hoses and seals.

Automatic Transmission Shift Problems

Many Volvos use an Aisin automatic transmission that can develop harsh or delayed shifts, flare between gears or a bump when coming to a stop as fluid ages, especially in heat and heavy traffic. Volvo considers the fluid long-life, but we often find it worn at higher mileage. We scan adaptation data, check fluid condition, perform fluid exchanges and reset adaptations.

Timing Belt on Five-Cylinder Engines

Volvo’s older five-cylinder engines, used in models such as the S60, V70, XC70 and XC90 through roughly the mid-2010s, use a timing belt that must be replaced on a mileage and age schedule, often around 100,000 miles or 10 years, varying by model/engine. Because these are interference engines, a broken belt causes major damage. We replace the belt, tensioner, idler and water pump together.

Angle Gear Leaks and Failure on AWD Models

Older all-wheel-drive Volvos, including the XC90, XC70, S60 and V70, use an angle gear, or bevel gear, to send power to the rear wheels. It runs hot and its fluid is rarely changed, which can lead to leaks, worn seals and eventually failure that leaves only front-wheel drive. We inspect for leaks, service the angle gear fluid and replace failed units.

Costa Mesa Volvo Repair & Maintenance FAQs

Where is ExperTec Automotive Costa Mesa located?

Our Costa Mesa shop is at 1934 Newport Blvd, Costa Mesa, CA 92627. Call (949) 645-7722 or book online.

What are your hours in Costa Mesa?

Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. We are closed on Sunday.

My Volvo’s transmission fluid is called “lifetime” fluid. Should it still be changed?

For most Orange County drivers we recommend it. Heat and stop-and-go traffic wear transmission fluid faster than ideal conditions, and a fluid exchange at higher mileage, often somewhere around 60,000 miles, is inexpensive protection for a costly component.

Is your work guaranteed?

Yes. Every repair includes a 3 Year / 36,000 Mile Nationwide Warranty plus 12 Month / 12,000 Mile Roadside Assistance.
