Star Certified Smog Check Center

What is a Star Certified Smog Check Center?

The California STAR Certified Smog Check Program is a program designed to reduce air pollution generated by motor vehicles. It ensures that vehicles meet the state’s emissions standards.

A STAR Certified station is a smog check station that meets higher performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) in California. These stations are authorized to perform smog checks on vehicles. They are typically equipped with advanced emissions testing equipment and their technicians undergo specialized training to accurately assess vehicle emissions.

The STAR program aims to identify high-emitting vehicles and help owners repair or retire them to reduce air pollution. It plays a crucial role in maintaining California’s air quality standards and protecting public health.

Expertec Automotive is proud to be recognized as a state certified Smog center for Testing and Repair. We are also authorized by the state to carry out repairs under the CAP repair assistance program.

What is the CAP Repair Assistance Program?

The CAP (Consumer Assistance Program) Repair Assistance Program is a California initiative that helps low-income vehicle owners repair or retire their vehicles if they fail a smog check. The program is administered by the Bureau of Automotive Repair in California, this is how it works;

  1. Eligibility: Vehicle owners must meet certain income eligibility requirements to qualify for assistance under the CAP program. These requirements vary depending on factors such as household size and income level.

  2. Repair Assistance: If a vehicle fails its smog check and the owner qualifies for the program, CAP may provide financial assistance to help cover the cost of repairs necessary to bring the vehicle into compliance with emissions standards. This assistance helps ensure that low-income individuals can afford to keep their vehicles on the road while reducing emissions.

  3. Vehicle Retirement: In some cases where repairs are not feasible or cost-effective, CAP may offer incentives for owners to retire their vehicles. This involves surrendering the vehicle to a designated dismantler, who then recycles it in an environmentally responsible manner.

The CAP Repair Assistance Program plays a vital role in promoting clean air and reducing vehicle emissions in California by providing support to individuals who might otherwise struggle to maintain their vehicles in compliance with emissions standards.

What is a Smog Check?

Every vehicle over 8 years old requires a smog check every other year, a check is also required if you sell a car over 4 years old or are registering an out of state car in California for the first time. The DMV will indicate on your registration renewal form whether a Smog Check is required or not.

The test is designed to measure the amount of pollutants that your car is producing to make sure that it falls within California’s emissions standards. The test itself will consist of;

  • A Visual inspection of the exhaust system
  • A functional inspection of the Check Engine Light, Ignition System, Exhaust Gas Recirculation System, Fuel Evaporation System and the Gas Cap
  • A Functional Inspection of the Diagnostic Systems
  • Tailpipe Emissions Test
