Mercedes-Benz Regular Maintenance

Most modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles use the Flexible Service System, which displays a reminder for Service A or Service B in the instrument cluster. Service A typically comes first, at about 10,000 miles or 1 year, and covers a synthetic oil and filter change, fluid checks, tire inspection and a brake check. Service B follows about a year or 10,000 miles later and adds a cabin filter replacement, brake fluid exchange and a more thorough inspection. The two then alternate, while items like spark plugs, air filters, transmission fluid and coolant are added at set mileage or time milestones. Short trips and heavy traffic can bring reminders up sooner.

Factory Guideline Maintenance Schedules

Upon completion of the standard maintenance tasks we provide an additional 30-point inspection to make sure that all components in your Mercedes-Benz are up to date and working well.

Service A

~10,000 miles / 1 year (then alternates)

  • Synthetic engine oil & filter change
  • Check and correct fluid levels
  • Tire inflation check and inspection
  • Brake component inspection
  • Reset Flexible Service System reminder

Service B

~20,000 miles / 2 years (then alternates)

  • Everything in Service A
  • Cabin dust/combination filter replacement
  • Brake fluid exchange (~every 2 years)
  • Expanded inspection of suspension, belts and hoses
  • Milestone items: air filter, spark plugs, transmission fluid (varies by model/engine)

Common Mercedes-Benz Issues We See in Costa Mesa — and How We Fix Them

At ExperTec Automotive, we’ve been repairing Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Orange County for over 30 years. Even well-built Mercedes-Benz models develop specific problems as they age, and 55 Freeway commutes and coastal salt air add to the wear. Our Costa Mesa technicians diagnose these issues quickly, follow Mercedes-Benz factory repair procedures and use quality parts you can trust.

M272 V6 balance shaft gear wear

Some 3.5L M272 V6 engines from roughly 2005 to 2008, found in models like the C-Class, E-Class, ML and SLK, are known for premature wear of the balance shaft or idler gear. The result is a check engine light with camshaft and crankshaft correlation codes and rough running. Mileage varies by model/engine. We confirm the fault and explain repair options.

Camshaft adjuster magnet leaks and timing chain wear

Four-cylinder engines like the M271 and M274, used in the C250, C300, E300 and GLC 300, are known for camshaft adjuster magnets that leak oil into the wiring harness, and some engines develop timing chain stretch with a cold-start rattle. We replace leaking magnets, check harness damage and measure cam timing with dealer-level tools.

Oil leaks from cooler seals and covers

Many Mercedes engines can develop leaks from the oil cooler seals, oil filter housing, valve covers and timing covers as gaskets harden with heat. Oil dripping onto hot exhaust parts causes smoke and a burning smell, especially in summer traffic. We dye-test to find the true source and reseal it with OEM-quality gaskets.

Airmatic suspension failures

S-Class, E-Class, CLS, ML, GL and GLS models with Airmatic suspension can develop leaking air struts, a failing compressor or a faulty valve block with age. Signs include the car sitting low after parking, a suspension warning message or a harsh ride. We pinpoint leaks, test the compressor and relay and replace only the failed parts.

7G-Tronic conductor plate and valve body faults

The 7G-Tronic automatic transmission used across many Mercedes models is known for conductor plate and speed sensor failures, causing harsh shifts, a stuck gear or limp mode. Old fluid can make shift quality worse. We read transmission codes with dealer-level tools, service the fluid and filter, and replace or program the conductor plate when needed.

BlueTEC diesel AdBlue and NOx sensor problems

BlueTEC diesel models such as the ML350, GL350, GLE and E-Class use an AdBlue (DEF) system and NOx sensors to control emissions. Heaters, pumps and sensors can fail, triggering countdown warnings that can limit restarts. Short trips also clog the DPF. We diagnose the full emissions system and replace faulty components.
