Expert Hyundai maintenance and repair from ASE-certified technicians at ExperTec Automotive Costa Mesa.

Costa Mesa is full of Hyundais doing the daily grind: Elantras and Sonatas commuting along Newport Boulevard, Tucsons and Santa Fes running kids to activities near the OC Fair grounds, and Ioniq 5s gliding quietly past South Coast Plaza. ExperTec Automotive at 1934 Newport Blvd has cared for them for more than 30 years.
Here is something many owners do not realize: by Hyundai’s own definitions, short trips, stop-and-go traffic and hot weather usually count as severe driving. Many Costa Mesa errands fit that description, so we often recommend the severe schedule, especially for direct-injected and turbocharged engines.
Our ASE-certified technicians use dealer-level scan tools, install OEM-quality parts and document every service, which matters if you ever need to show an engine maintenance history. Repairs are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty from the shop voted OC’s best auto repair ten years straight.
Hyundai uses a fixed mileage schedule split into normal and severe maintenance rather than an oil life algorithm. Normal intervals for many recent models put oil changes around 7,500-8,000 miles or 12 months, while severe use, which includes short trips, extensive idling, stop-and-go traffic, hot weather and towing, cuts that to roughly 3,750-5,000 miles, varying by model/engine. Many Southern California drivers fit the severe definition. Keeping receipts for every service also matters, because Hyundai may ask for maintenance records on an engine warranty claim.
Upon completion of the standard maintenance tasks we provide an additional 30-point inspection to make sure that all components in your Hyundai are up to date and working well.
~Every 7,500-8,000 miles or 12 months (varies by model/engine)
~Every 3,750-5,000 miles for short trips, heat, idling and towing
At ExperTec Automotive, we’ve been repairing Hyundai vehicles in Orange County for over 30 years. Even well-built Hyundai models develop specific problems as they age, and 55 Freeway commutes and coastal salt air add to the wear. Our Costa Mesa technicians diagnose these issues quickly, follow Hyundai factory repair procedures and use quality parts you can trust.
The 2.0L and 2.4L Theta II GDI engines in many ~2011-2019 Sonatas, Santa Fe Sports and Tucsons are widely reported for connecting rod bearing wear, causing knocking, oil consumption, stalling or a check engine light. We perform oil consumption and noise diagnosis, confirm software updates, document findings and help owners with warranty or repair options.
Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the cylinder, so intake valves never get washed clean. Over time, carbon builds up and causes rough idle, hesitation and misfires, especially with short-trip driving. It varies by model/engine and mileage. We confirm with scan data and inspection, then clean the intake valves and replace ignition parts if needed.
Many ~2011-2016 Elantras and Sonatas with electric power steering develop a clunk or click in the steering wheel when turning at low speeds. The cause is usually a worn flexible coupler between the steering motor and column. We confirm the noise source, replace the coupler with an updated part and verify the steering feel.
The 7-speed dual clutch transmission in models such as the Tucson, Kona, Elantra and Veloster can hesitate from a stop, shudder at low speed or feel jerky in traffic, varying by model year. We read transmission data with dealer-level tools, check for software updates, run clutch relearns and inspect for wear before recommending repairs.
Some Ioniq 5 and related E-GMP models have been widely reported for integrated charging control unit failures, leading to a dead 12V battery, charging faults or a loss of power warning. We scan high-voltage and charging systems, test the 12V battery and charging behavior, and coordinate updates or repairs so you are not stranded.
A failing clockspring can cause the airbag light to come on, the horn to stop working or steering wheel buttons to fail, a common issue on several older Elantras, Accents and Santa Fes. We scan the airbag system, confirm the clockspring is the cause and replace it with an OEM-quality part, then clear and verify all codes.
