Expert BMW maintenance and repair from ASE-certified technicians at ExperTec Automotive Costa Mesa.

If your BMW has started leaving small spots on the driveway, you are in good company. Oil and coolant leaks are part of owning a 3 Series, 5 Series or X5 as the miles add up, and ExperTec Automotive in Costa Mesa has been fixing them correctly for more than 30 years.
Our shop at 1934 Newport Blvd sits on the corridor between the 55 Freeway and Newport Beach, where BMWs spend their days on short errands to South Coast Plaza and coastal drives in salty air. Short trips are tough on engine oil, and the sea breeze speeds up corrosion on brake and suspension parts, so we keep an eye on both.
Our ASE-certified technicians use dealer-level scan tools to read and reset Condition Based Service data, register new batteries and code repairs properly. Every job uses OEM-quality parts and carries a 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty, from the shop voted OC’s best auto repair 10 years in a row.
BMW uses Condition Based Service (CBS), which tracks engine oil, brake pads, brake fluid, spark plugs, filters and vehicle checks individually and shows the remaining distance or time for each in iDrive or the instrument cluster. Rather than one fixed interval, oil changes often come up around 10,000 miles or once a year and brake fluid every two years, with plugs and filters at longer intervals, all varying by model/engine and how the car is driven. Many owners of turbocharged BMWs choose shorter oil intervals for extra protection, and our dealer-level scan tools let us reset each CBS item correctly after service.
Upon completion of the standard maintenance tasks we provide an additional 30-point inspection to make sure that all components in your BMW are up to date and working well.

At ExperTec Automotive, we’ve been repairing BMW vehicles in Orange County for over 30 years. Even well-built BMW models develop specific problems as they age, and 55 Freeway commutes and coastal salt air add to the wear. Our Costa Mesa technicians diagnose these issues quickly, follow BMW factory repair procedures and use quality parts you can trust.
The oil filter housing gasket is one of the most common BMW leaks, affecting many six-cylinder engines such as the N52, N54 and N55, as well as four-cylinder N20 engines. Oil can seep onto the drive belt, where it may get pulled into the engine or damage the belt. We dye-trace the leak, replace the gaskets and inspect the belt and pulleys for oil damage.
BMW valve cover gaskets harden with heat cycles and often leak oil onto the exhaust manifold, causing a burning oil smell or light smoke from under the hood. It is common on six-cylinder engines and the N20, and some plastic valve covers also crack. We clean and trace the leak, replace the gasket or full cover as needed and check the spark plug wells for oil.
Many BMWs use plastic expansion tanks, radiator necks and hoses, plus electric water pumps and thermostats on engines like the N52, N54 and N55. These can fail with little warning, often from roughly 60,000 to 100,000 miles, varying by model/engine. Overheating risks serious damage, so we pressure-test the system, check pump operation with dealer-level software and replace parts as a matched set.
The 2.0L N20 turbo four-cylinder used in many early-to-mid 2010s 328i, 428i, X1, X3 and Z4 models is known for timing chain guide wear that can lead to chain failure. A whining or rattling noise from the front or rear of the engine is the warning sign. We listen, scan for timing data and replace the chain and guides with updated parts.
The twin-turbo N54 in 335i, 135i and 535i models from the late 2000s is known for high-pressure fuel pump failures and leaking injectors. Symptoms include long cranks, reduced power warnings, stumbling and misfires. We check fuel rail pressures with live data, test injectors cylinder by cylinder and replace failed parts with the correct revised versions.
The twin-turbo 4.4L N63 V8 in many 550i, 750i and X5 xDrive50i models is known for heavy oil consumption, valve stem seal wear, coolant leaks and heat-related failures inside the hot-V, where the turbos sit. We measure oil consumption, check for blue smoke at startup, pressure-test the cooling system and outline repair options clearly before any major work begins.
