HOW DO I CHOOSE WHAT CAR TO BUY?
Buying a car, for most people, is the second largest purchase of their lives behind only a house. And most of the time, people buy cars before they buy houses, making their choice the single biggest expense of their life up to that point. With this in mind, choosing the right car to buy is extremely important and not something to be taken lightly. So how can you choose the car that is right for you and will suit your needs for years to come? There are a few key things to consider that can help you make a solid pick.
One of the biggest questions is whether you should buy a new or used car. Buying new has several advantages, such as being able to option the car exactly as you want it and being the first owner and knowing exactly what it has been through. Most new cars also come with manufacturer warranties which last at least a few years and will cover either all or the majority of the cost of any repairs.
However, one major disadvantage of buying new is depreciation. As soon as it leaves the showroom, it will be considered ‘used’ and begin losing value. Some cars can drop up to 80% of their value in just a few years.
Used cars, on the other hand, can be great values, and many car companies have certified pre-owned options that are inspected to ensure that they are in good condition and usually can also be bought with some kind of warranty. Buying used also lets you choose from cars that have been proven to be reliable and, depending on the car, easier to work on without requiring an expensive dealer visit like some new cars.
The next step is to decide on a body style that best suits your needs. For somebody living in the city where parking is scarce and their commute is plagued by heavy traffic, a small compact car that can squeeze into tight spaces and get great gas mileage may be the best. For somebody who regularly drives off road or in bad weather conditions, a more rugged vehicle with all-wheel-drive may be more suitable. For a family, a minivan or SUV might be the best choice. If you are single and enjoy driving, and only need to carry yourself most of the time, a two-seat sports car can give you the most smiles per gallon without being too impractical and coming up short for your daily needs.
Another major factor that many people fail to consider is the running costs of their car. To realistically buy a car that will suit you, you should estimate the insurance costs as well as projected maintenance costs and see if you can really afford it. Some luxury cars only a few years old can cost less than a new entry-level compact, but the maintenance costs in many cases will still be luxury-priced.
Finally, when you’ve done all your calculations and have a short list of models you’re seriously considering, the only thing left to do is test drive them! Nothing will tell you if you like a car or not like a test drive can. So happy hunting and from us here at ExperTec Automotive, we hope we can help you find the car you love.
